Two of the most popular options for staying warm in cold water are wetsuits and drysuits. While both serve to insulate the body from cold environments, they do so in very different ways. 1. How They Work: Insulation Methods

The primary difference between wetsuits and drysuits lies in how they keep you warm.

Wetsuits: A wetsuit works by trapping a thin layer of water between the suit and your skin. This layer of water is quickly warmed by your body, creating a thermal barrier that helps reduce heat loss. Wetsuits are typically made from neoprene, a flexible material that provides both insulation and mobility. However, because some water still enters the suit, it’s crucial to choose a wetsuit that fits snugly to minimize water circulation.

Drysuits: In contrast, a drysuit keeps you completely dry by sealing out all water. Instead of relying on a thin layer of water for insulation, drysuits use air and your undergarments to maintain warmth. The suit is made of waterproof materials such as rubber, nylon, or trilaminate, and includes seals around the wrists, neck, and ankles to prevent any water from entering.
